Spring is here, the birds are flying in and getting ready to nest. This last week at Peaceful Springs Nature Preserve I heard the first Golden-cheeked Warbler calling and picking it's territory for the season. The females should be arriving soon. I scouted out the canyon where I heard it calling, and I picked 3 spots where it might have it's territory. Then I waited another week for it to recover from it's migration from Mexico and to establish it's territory. I went back to the first spot I choose and as I was just setting down my gear I looked up and 12 feet away sitting in an Ash Juniper was a beautiful Male Golden-cheeked Warbler watching me unload my gear. Of course, my camera was on the ground and any move to get it would spook the bird so we just watched each other for a minute or so until he flew off. So I know I have a good spot in it's area, now to wait for him to come by again. Well a few hours passed and I can hear him and two other males calling up and down the canyon, testing each other. The sun was getting high so the light was getting bad and that's when he came back. There was only enough time for 2 images, 1 was bad because he hopped onto another branch just as I hit the shutter, but this shot is the one I got before he flew off to patrol his area again. I will go back in a week and see if he will visit me again.
